Stray, New Zealand

Barrytown > Franz Joseph Glacier

On the way south to Franz Joseph we stopped at the coast and did a very steep walk up to 'Trig at Okarito'. The views from the top were amazing and you could see Franz Joseph in the distance as a white scar on the side of the mountain.  We met some firemen from the UK at the top who were on a trek round New Zealand to raise money for charity.

We got into Franz Joseph about 16:00 and did some washing, checked e-mails etc. and got some photographs copied off the digital camera and onto memory stick.
The bar of the hostel did some cracking pizza.  We spent the evening outside chatting at a picnic table. Occasionally jumping into the sauna which was still warm to take the chill off.  We went to bed quite early as we had booked a long days hiking on the glacier the next day.
